Posture and Movement

The Importance of Good Postures at Work

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are currently one of the leading causes of absenteeism in the workplace. Whether involving neck tension, lower back pain, or joint discomfort, these issues directly affect employees’ quality of life and team performance.

Whether lifting heavy loads or sitting for extended periods, employees are exposed to postures that, when poorly adapted, can lead to fatigue and chronic pain. Yet simple actions and ergonomic adjustments can significantly reduce these risks.

This workshop offers an interactive and personalised approach, enabling each participant to identify the best practices suited to their role and specific needs. Through real-life scenarios and expert guidance, participants will learn essential habits to protect their health and enhance daily well-being.

OBJECTIVE

Prevent musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and improve comfort at work.

CONTENT

  • Practical exercises performing daily tasks at the workstation to highlight poor postures adopted on a daily basis
  • Use of an interactive tool to visualize incorrect postures and unconscious areas of strain
  • Topics covered: definition and consequences of MSDs, muscle warm-ups, and MSD prevention
  • Practical exercises to learn proper postures and correct movements

Workshop Programme

1Understanding the Impact of Poor Posture

In this first part, participants will gain awareness of the consequences of improper posture on the body and well-being.

  • The dangers of MSDs: Why are musculoskeletal disorders so widespread? What are their short- and long-term effects?
  • Static postures vs dynamic movement:How does immobility affect blood circulation, muscles and joints?
  • Posture myths and realities: Is there really one single “correct” way to sit or lift a load?

This theoretical introduction provides a foundation for understanding how seemingly minor movements can become harmful when repeated daily.

2Practical Group Sessions: Adapting Movements to the Workplace

Learning happens through practice. This phase places participants in real-life scenarios to observe and adjust their posture according to their role. Each group will identify the best practices to implement and share them with others under the guidance of a C2D Prevention expert coach.

Scenario 1: Office Work

Office workers spend an average of seven hours a day seated, often in positions that strain the back, shoulders and wrists.

This module enables them to:

  • Optimise their workstation: Adjusting the chair, screen position, keyboard and mouse placement
  • Correct harmful postures: How to avoid muscle strain caused by poor seated positions
  • Learn active micro-breaks: Simple exercises to relieve pressure and prevent muscular fatigue

Cette introduction théorique permet de mieux comprendre pourquoi certains gestes, pourtant anodins en apparence, peuvent être néfastes lorsqu’ils sont répétés quotidiennement.

Scenario 2: Lifting Heavy Loads

Improper lifting techniques can lead to lower back pain and long-term injury.

This module covers:

  • Safe lifting principles: Engaging the right muscles to avoid strain
  • Balance and breathing: Adapting support and posture for optimal effort
  • Habits to embed: Repeating proper movements to avoid harmful compensations

Each group will have the opportunity to test various movements and postures with individualised support to identify the most suitable solutions for their specific work constraints.

3Expert Coaching: Keys to Sustainable Change

An ergonomics and MSD prevention specialist will deliver daily-use techniques, including:

  • Strategies for integrating proper movements: How to make progressive and lasting adjustments
  • Warm-up and stretching exercises: How to prepare the body for effort and avoid end-of-day tension
  • Energy management and hydration: Why these factors influence posture and physical endurance
  • Chronic pain prevention: Recognising and addressing early warning signs before they worsen

The aim is to provide practical, easily applicable solutions tailored to each participant’s individual needs.
